APK updates

Goal​

Bugfixes and features on child tablet without store delay.

For whom​

Users with sideload APK; admins publishing updates.

Where in the app​

In-app update prompt or /admin/app-updates for admins.

Prerequisites​

Existing app installed.

Step by step​

  1. App checks version against server at startup (routineassist.com).
  2. If newer APK: Update available notice.
  3. Download via in-app or admin portal link.
  4. Install over old version (Android asks confirmation).
  5. Reopen app — cap sync assets already in APK.
  6. Admin publishes via /admin with email in ADMIN_EMAILS.
  7. Test update on emulator before family rollout.

Options & settings​

Auto-update via Play Store only if project publishes there — sideload remains common.

Tips & troubleshooting​

Note installed version in family docs for support. Family Link / child profile: in-app update may be blocked — parent must allow install unknown apps for Routine Assist in Family Link, or download APK via Download APK (for parent) in the update screen and install with parent PIN.
